celebrating 100 years of art @ Edinboro
ART 100 is a celebration of the centennial anniversary of art and art education in
northwest Pennsylvania. Since 1920, the PennWest Edinboro department of art education
– originally part of the Edinboro Normal School, established in 1857 – has trained
thousands of art educators, whose legacy in western PA is immeasurable, and has developed
professional artists that have transformed life and culture in NWPA.
The mission of PennWest Edinboro is to develop students personally, intellectually
and professionally to become contributing citizens to the Commonwealth and beyond.
For decades, students in public school systems throughout the region were educated
in the arts by graduates of Edinboro Normal School and PennWest Edinboro. This celebration
highlights and promotes the extensive legacy of Edinboro’s role in art education and
the arts in the community at-large, while working to permanently embed art as a central
tenet of life at PennWest Edinboro.
As PASSHE’s largest and most prestigious art program, PennWest Edinboro boasts more
than 6,000 art alumni with nearly 1,000 living in Erie County. The visual arts play
a vital role in economic development by celebrating creative communities and the transformational
impact artists have on the quality of life in Erie County.
The ART100 celebration has been extended. This year, we’re hoping there will be more opportunities to gather and celebrate all the accomplishments of Edinboro’s Art programs. Information about the extension of the ART100 celebration will be subject to change as we continue to navigate the regulations associated with COVID-19.
